2021年5月23日「私たちの知らないBrazil」をテーマに、本学非常勤講師でもあるAngela Karsten氏にリモートにてお話を聞き、本学学生とディスカッションしました。移民の国としての成り立ちや、多様な民族の地域ごとの特色、保健医療システム、自然との関わりと人々の生活文化に耳を傾け、画像や映像を通して知ったブラジルは美しく広大で、人々のおおらかさが、その自然や歴史から導かれたのではないかと感じるに十分なものでした。サンパウロにある日本人街の話では、100年以上前に大変な苦労で開墾した日本人の仕事ぶりや真面目な人柄に、今でも多くのブラジル人が敬意を表していると聞き、誇りに思う時間でもありました。参加学生は医療情報学科、看護学科、薬学科、球探足球比分からの8名でしたが、気になる医療システムや若者の政治への参加意識、異なる食文化から美意識まで、それぞれの質問をきっかけに大いに話が盛り上がり、予定時間を超えての交流となりました。便利な通信事情で簡単に情報が手に入る昨今ですが、その国の人から直接聞いた話は、興味深く、強く印象に残ることでしょう。参加者が心に刻んだ国際交流の楽しさをさらに多くの人たちに知ってほしいと願っています。

On May 23, 2021, we conducted the online international activity “Explore Brazil!” Ms. Angela Karsten, a part-time lecturer at our university, presented remotely and had a discussion with our students. Listening to her talk, we learned about Brazil’s origins as a country of immigrants, the unique characteristics of its various ethnic groups and regions, healthcare system, as well as people’s lifestyle and culture. Also, by watching images and videos, we learned about the beauty and vastness of the country, which was enough to make us feel that the generosity of Brazilian people came from its nature and history. When we talked about the Japanese town of Sao Paulo, we were told that many Brazilians still respect the work ethic and earnest character of Japanese people who worked so hard to cultivate the land more than 100 years ago. The eight participating students (from the departments of Healthcare Informatics, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Applied Biological Sciences) asked questions about the medical system, young people’s sense of participation in politics, different food cultures, and aesthetics, which led to a lively discussion that went over the scheduled time. In these days of convenient communication and easy access to information, hearing directly from the people of a country was motivating and left a strong impression. We hope to share and expand the joy of international exchange as the participants have learned in their hearts.
